Club racing was held at Tarwin Lower with the seniors riding 19km out to the top of the Walkerville hill to the turn off to Cape Liptrap and return. The juniors raced a 16km race on an out and back run. Conditions were cold and still so the bunches stayed together save for a few who were in trouble on the 2km climb to the turn.
The senior field of 21 riders saw 2 riders start with 11 minutes handicap followed by another 2 with 5minutes handicap followed by 6 riders on 3minutes, 5 riders on 1 minute and a 6 rider scratch bunch. The first 4 riders managed to reach the turn and head for home before the others. However, the scratch bunch had closed down the 3 minutes to the other 11 riders. The surge up the hill to the turn saw several riders in trouble.
The run back to Tarwin Lower saw 15 riders chasing down 4 and so shortly after the cross roads it was a field nearly all together. The bunch was working well on the run home and doing 40km per hour which soon found a few other tired legs. A wall of riders reached the turn at the bowling green and with only 1 lane available riders needed to be well positioned for the last 200m dash to the line. The sprint produced 3 riders across the road with Steve Piasente grabbing the honours right on the line centimetres ahead of Dave McFarlane and Gavin Slavin. They were followed closely by another good finish to Tom Debenham in 4th, 5th to Phil Camenzuli and 6th to Rod Cheyne. Eamon Feely was given 7th ahead of Kevin Feely 8th, Neil White 9th and 10th to Peter Hollins.
The Junior race saw Liam McCall give a start of 2 minutes to Thomas McFarlane and Matt Dudley for their 16 km ride. Liam worked hard to get the other 2 in sight by the turn. With 400m to go Matt Dudley jumped away from Thomas and sprinted home a clear winner whilst Thomas just held of a fast finishing Liam to claim 2nd with a bike length to spare.
Next weekend racing is at Pound Creek whilst Tuesday night there is a club meeting at Neil Whites residence.
