The Leongatha Cycling Club promoted its first cyclo cross meet in 3 years. The venue was the Dowel property at Leongatha Sth using some great bush and grass for the course. Racing was held on Sunday morning with a lazy north east wind blowing but temperatures eventually reaching 16c. We had riders from Berwick, Traralgon, Wonthaggi, Korumburra and Leongatha. There were 11 seniors and 10 juniors covering the Under 17 and Under 13 age groups. For the juniors it was a first time for a number of the riders.
In the senior event run over 55 minutes for the first place rider – Tom Dudley. He managed to clock up 9 laps or just 9km. But the 1.5km course included around 500m over the paddock and a very heavy mud section. Tom and the second place rider – Chris Baillie, rode mountain bikes and the larger floatation tyres helped them. Brett Franklin, 3rd , David McFarlane 4th and Morgan Barnes 5th, were all on gravel bikes and the grass and mud took its toll on them.
In the Under 17 section, Blake Thoonen raced 4 laps in 27.30min to win convincingly. Next home was Rory King followed by Ethan Langstaff. In the Under 13 group, Charlie Moule raced the 4 laps in 30.14 min to have a clear win. As if that was not enough he rode another 5 laps with his dad in the senior race. Zac Dowell picked up 2nd ahead of Darcy Hengstberger, Macen Hengstberger, Jaya Dowell, Oscar Chadwick and Thomas Moon. Several of these riders were just 9 years old and found the heavy conditions pretty wearing.
The club will hold another cyclo cross day but may need to wait until after the winter to be able to use the Dowell farm. Many thanks to Rob and Natasha and family for making it a great day.
