Our junior riders performed well over the weekend at the State Junior Road Championships held at Glenrowan. On Saturday were the Individual Time Trials. Bernadette claimed the win with a solid performance. Will continue with his good form from the club champs to place 4th, again averaging over 40km/h. Austin recovering the bug also rode well to come 5th. Ollie put in a solid effort to come 8th and Tom Fitz had a great ride to come 11th. Sunday saw exceptional weather for the road champs around the 21km Taminick Gap circuit. Bernadette again rode solidly to claim her second championship win. Great effort Bernie. Ollie was keen to do well and found himself in a break of 5 after climbing well up the Taminick Gap Hill. He claimed 3rd in a sprint finish. Tom Fitz had another good day finishing in a bunch of 5 to come 14th. Austin came a close 5th in a 11 rider bunch sprint. The u19 men had mixed fortunes. Harry retiring after a lap when the bug got the better of him. Will rode well for 4 laps before retiring and Tom McFarlane had a good ride to finish 8th. Many thanks to Tony for his support and advice over the weekend – greatly appreciated.

Cycling Victoria – coaching course 5-6th March

Coaching courseA contingent of six LCC members completed a two-day Cycling Victoria coaching course in Melbourne this weekend. This is a club initiative to increase support for new and junior riders right through to high performance cyclists, and was funded by a grant from Sport and Recreation Victoria. It was a fantastic course, and the new coaches are keen to share the knowledge gained with the members. Have a chat with one of the coaches when you run into them next to find out more, and if this may be a course you’d be interested in attending in the future!

Rod Hopcraft

Former Leongatha Club member Rod Hopcraft has passed away on Thursday 3rd March.
Rod was a former top class track cyclist who settled in Mirboo North and joined Leongatha in the 70’s riding Club events, providing valuable help with the running of the Cycling carnivals. He was also competitive and competed in veteran events with great success.
At the Leongatha Friday night track events he would entertain the spectators with his humour and was well liked by all.
A true gentleman!
Sympathies and condolences to Rod’s family from the Leongatha Cycling Club.
