The Christmas break has seen cycling carnivals at Bendigo, Shepparton and Wangaratta over successive days. In the past the Leongatha Cycling Club has often been well represented at these meets but this year our lone presence has been that of Thomas McFarlane. Thomas has continued his good season form with a run of outstanding results over these 3 days. He will need to come back and recover over the next few weeks as he has also been selected to ride in the Victorian Under 19 team at the upcoming Australian National Titles to be held over the last weekend in January at the Northcote Velodrome.
At Bendigo, Thomas was 1st in the Men’s A grade scratch race, 2nd in the Men’s Keirin and 3rd in the Victorian 10k Motor Paced Title. At Shepparton Thomas had a great day again winning the men’s A grade scratch race, 3rd in the Men’s Keirin, 1st in the 2000m feature wheelrace of the 90m mark and finished the day with 1st in the Victorian 5km Scratch race title. After those outstanding days it was perhaps a let-down when he raced at Wangaratta has he grabbed 3rd in the A grade scratch race, 3rd in the kierin and then a 2nd in the Pat Toohey Memorial Scratch race.

Following last weekends working bee at the velodrome things are all set for the start of the track season. An introductory night is scheduled for Thursday 16 at the Netball rooms from 7.00pm to 9.00pm. This is open to riders wishing to come and try track racing as well as our regular track riders. Club coaches and officials will help get riders fitted out on bikes.
There has been a good turn out of riders with weekend ride bunches at Leongatha, Inverloch and Phillip Island. Enjoy the riding by joining in with a bunch. At Leongatha riders leave from the Post Office corner at 8.00am and 9.00am both on Saturday and Sunday. New riders are always welcome to join the bunch. Club members will make sure you get back to the Post Office corner.
Track season training will start with training on Wed Oct 22 and 29 (6.00pm) with the first racing night scheduled for Friday Oct 31 with racing start at 7.45pm. This is a great time and place to check out cycling. Racing caters for boys and girls plus men and women.
Club member Thomas McFarlane has been busy on the track at the Adelaide Super Drome this past week competing in the Oceania Track games. Thursday saw Thomas grab third in Junior U19 scratch race whilst on Friday he was part of the 4 rider Victorian team to take third in the Teams Pursuit. On Saturday he rode in the Points Score race and after his Team mate grabbed a lap on the field very early in the race the rest of the race was spent helping defend that lead. As a first year rider in this age bracket the performances have been excellent. This week culminates around 4 weeks of weekend training camps in Melbourne so well done to David and Maree for getting Thomas to all these events.
