The cycling club members had a big weekend promoting the Leongatha Junior Tour with racing at Kernot on Saturday and Poowong on Sunday. Well over 100 riders fronted for the under 17, Under 15, Under 13 and Under 11 events with riders coming from West Australia, South Australia, Albury, Mildura, Bright and elsewhere from regional Victoria and Melbourne. Some of the main winners were the interstate riders so competition was pretty intensive in each age group and grading. The riders raced a time trial and road stage at Kernot and a further road stage at Poowong. This tour was part of the state series with another tour scheduled for Ararat in a fortnight.
The Club members did a great job helping out with corners, lead cars and catering. We also had the support of the Poowong Football Netball club on Sunday with catering. This was a change of format for our junior road promotion and the Club received many compliments on the running of the event. The visitors thought our scenic roads were fantastic for riding and racing.
Our local riders had a great weekend and best outcome was Thomas Fitzgerald who claimed a 3rd in the time trial and 6th in the road stage on Saturday. He backed up with another good ride to be just pipped at the line to take 4th on Sunday. This left him in 6th place overall in the Men 17 B grade. The winner of this section came from Bright. In the Men 17 A grade, Oliver McLean, who is having his first year in this division rode really well and finished the weekend with a 9th at Poowong and moved him up from 18th to 14th overall. The top rider in this group was Sam Eddy from the Echuca-Moama Club. In the Women 17, Felicity Waddell worked hard all weekend but was out of the placings. In the Men 15 B grade division, Kaleb Jans and Jack Allen were just off the pace and swapped 9th and 10th places most events. Overall general classification saw Kaleb 9th and Jack in 11th. The top rider in the Under 15 was a rider from the Peel Club in West Australia.
The planning now starts for next year and for the 3 day Gippsland Tour in June where older Club members get a chance to turn the pedals. Next weekend the Club will race on SUNDAY at the Leongatha Industrial Estate. Business owner in the estate Steve Allen says that with some roads recently asphalted the criterium racing should be a great change from battling up hills.
