Velodrome 18th December 2020

A great Friday night saw the Club wrap up racing for 2020 and enjoy a Christmas BBQ. With 13 starters for the night the riders were able to race in well matched cohorts and this produced some great racing. First event of the night was an A grade 6 lap scratch race and Ryder Evans jumped away with almost 2 laps to go, however, the small break he gained did not last long as Fletcher Hill quickly cranked up the gear to catch Ryder and go on for the win. Ethan Davis showed plenty of speed to come home second whilst Oscar Davis grabbed 3rd on the line.

In the B Grade 5 lap scratch race, Ryan Beggs tried to steal the race hitting out hard at the start. Zac Evans and Tom Geary were not marking the action up front and there was a gap from Ryan back to Hugh Livingstone before Zac Evans decided he had better skip the battle with Tom Geary. In the last lap Hugh hit the lead but Zac closed the gap to go on and score a good win from Hugh and Tom who also managed to ride though the field.

In the C grade 3 lap scratch race, Asher Davis powered home in the last lap to take the win from Bastian Jefferies and Trent Beggs. Stephen Spencer had looked to be in the placings but was swamped in the last 200m.

Into the 1 lap race against the clock. Six of the riders managed new PB’s. Quickest for the night was Oscar Davis in a time of 35.60sec just ahead of brother Ethan with a new PB at 36.55sec which was the first time he had gone below 37sec. Flecther Hill at 36.58 sec was next best but he has not been able to take it to another level over the past few weeks. Ryder Evans at 39.50secs is another who has been marking time over the past few weeks and perhaps with school finishing these riders are putting too much time into road training to get the best out of the track. Maybe some modified time on the road can bring some improvement.

In the B grade group Tom Geary pulled almost 2 secs of his time whilst recording a 40.12 sec so the new year will see him crack the 40sec mark. Hugh Livingstone at 44.17sec was next marginally in front of Zac Evans at 44.34sec.

In the C grade group, Asher Davis at 46.22 was quickest. But the big dash for the night was Stephen Spencer who took almost 4 secs from last weeks time and recorded anew PB at 48.81 sec. Trent Beggs also posted a new PB at 49.21 secs, just ahead of Bastian at 50.17sec.

Into the 1 lap handicaps and it was Ethan Davis (20m) who powered around for the win ahead of Oscar (10) and Fletcher (scr) into 3rd place. In the re-handicap, Ethan (10) was again very quick off the mark and finishing well for the second win with Ryder Evan (35) hanging on for 2nd and Oscar (5) holding Fletcher out for 3rd.

In the B grade race, Tom Geary (scr) flew away at the start to cover the field within half a lap and have a clear win. Hugh (15) kept chasing and came through for 2nd just ahead of Zac Evans (20m) in 3rd. In the re-handicap, Zac Evans (45) showed the benefit of his training efforts to secure the win ahead of Hugh (35) and Renee Hardacre (55) in 3rd as this time Tom Geary had run of legs.

In the C grade handicap, Asher Davis (scr) also flew around the field to take the win ahead of Stephen Spencer (30) with Bastian Jefferies (20) coming home for 3rd. In the re-handicap, Bastian (35) found the extra handicap to his liking as he raced around for the win over Stephen (40) and Trent Beggs (30) in for 3rd place.

With the BBQ not quite ready the riders had some sprint heats. In the first it was a match up between brothers Ethan and Oscar. In a close finish it was Oscar taking the win. In the second heat, Fletcher Hill had to work hard to keep Ryder Evans out. The third heat saw Hugh take the win ahead of Zac and Tom. The fourth heat was another close race and this time it was Renee taking the win ahead of Ryan. In the final heat Bastian Jefferies grabbed a close win over Stephen and Trent.

That left just enough time for another round of scratch races. In the A grade 5 lap race Fletcher kept his scratch race account clear with another win over Ethan and Ryder. In the B grade 4 lap race it was Hugh Livingstone who took the win ahead of Zac and Renee. In the C grade 3 lap race, Bastian Jefferies came through for the win over Stephen and Trent.

The club will take a 3 week break and resume with training on Wed 13 Jan and racing on 15 Jan. Any riders who get a new bike for Xmas are welcome to come along in the New Year and get some help from the club.
